Small molecules (e.g., formaldehyde, benzene) are adsorbed by micropores, while large molecules (e.g., dyes, humic acid) are adsorbed by mesopores. When the pore structure is mismatched with the target substance, even the highest adsorption capacity becomes ineffective.

Surface chemical properties: The functional groups (e.g. hydroxyl, carboxyl) on the surface of activated carbon affect its adsorption selectivity. For example, the activated carbon with negative surface charge is more likely to adsorb cationic pollutants, and the activated carbon loaded with silver ions also has antibacterial function.
